| CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 74 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
As a proud representative of California's coastal communities, I have always believed that our surf culture is more than a sport - it is a way of life, a source of local pride, and a powerful part of our state's identity. That is why I recently formed a bipartisan group of state legislators in taking a firm stand against an alarming proposal that threatens the integrity of Olympic surfing.
U.S. Ski and Snowboard (USSS) has put forward an attempt to take over governance of Olympic surfing. This move violates the intent of the Ted Stevens Act and disregards decades of investment, training, and leadership from the organization that has built American surfing from the ground up: USA Surfing. USA Surfing is the only federation recognized by the International Surfing Association for all surf disciplines - shortboard, longboard, para surfing, SUP surf, and prone racing. They have developed our athletes, guided their medical and safety teams, nurtured young talent, and helped bring home back-to-back Olympic gold medals. Their work is rooted in our beaches, our communities, and our athletes.
In contrast, USSS is a winter sports governing body with no surf lineage, no athlete development pipeline, no coastal infrastructure, and no history of investment in surfing. Their attempt to control Olympic surfing appears to be a commercial power play rather than an athlete-centered proposal.
That is why my colleagues and I submitted a formal bipartisan letter to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), urging them to reject this takeover and give USA Surfing's application full and fair consideration. The athletes who represent our nation deserve a governing body that understands their sport, protects their well-being, and strengthens surfing's future here at home.

The USOPC is accepting public comments on this issue. If you believe, as I do, that surfing should remain in the hands of those who know and live the sport, I encourage you to submit your own letter of support.

Let's protect our athletes, our coastline, and the future of surfing in the Olympic movement. California's surf community deserves nothing less!
