The California Energy Commission recently passed new regulations on vehicle replacement tires. The rules set standards for "rolling resistance," which the commission says will save drivers money in the long run by improving fuel economy. At the same time, as many as 70 percent of the tires now on the market would no longer be available, and the cost to purchase new tires would go up.
